The priest drives them home, and is satisfied with the woman's explanation that she is their mother. The boys tie the woman to the bed and refuse to let her go until she tells them where their real mother is.

The woman insists that she is their mother, and the twins burn her face, using a magnifying glass, to try to get her to tell them where their real mother is.

They then seal her mouth with tape to keep her from talking or screaming for help. Two employees of the Red Cross arrive to collect donations.

Although they initially await the return of the mother, they finally leave the house after receiving a large amount of cash from Elias, which he discreetly stole from his mother's purse.

Meanwhile, the woman breaks free from the adhesive tape around her mouth and yells for help, but is too late to attract the attention of the Red Cross employees.

The twins seal her lips with super glue , only to realize that she is unable to eat. The twins cut open her lips with a small pair of scissors.

As the woman is still bound and trapped, she wets her bed. The twins briefly set her free from her shackles to change the bedding, allowing her to subdue the boys and escape.

The twins, however, have set up a booby trap that causes her to fall and hit her head, knocking her unconscious.

The woman wakes glued to the living room floor. Elias starts to burn down the house to pressure her into telling them the truth about their mother.

The woman firmly insists that she is the twins' real mother. The woman then tells Elias that Lukas had died in an accident prior to her return home, meaning he was a hallucination all along as a coping mechanism and that Elias has gone mad ; incapable of accepting his other half's demise.

She tearfully explains to Elias that Lukas' death was not his fault and she begs her son to set her free so they can both move on from the tragedy.

Elias challenges her to prove that she is their mother by telling them what Lukas is doing. As she cannot see Elias' hallucination of Lukas threatening to set fire to a curtain, she cannot answer the question.

So Elias, believing that his real mother could see Lukas, grabs his arm and lights the curtain. The woman subsequently burns to death before firefighters arrive.

As they attempt to put out the fire, the woman is seen, unharmed, leaving the house and walking into the woods, completely unnoticed.

In that sense, Goodnight Mommy has a lot in common with The Babadook , where Amelia, a young widow, tries to protect her six-year-old son from a terrifying bogeyman.

But as the evil presence grows stronger, Amelia lets herself become erratic, paranoiac, and will ultimately be the instrument the Babadook will use to try to get to her son.

This twisted mother figure is not the only thing Goodnight Mommy and The Babadook have in common: Both movies were directed by a woman respectively Veronika Franz, in collaboration with Severin Fiala, and Jennifer Kent.

Both directors give the audience a gripping and nuanced perspective of a far-from-perfect motherhood, showing two women dealing quite badly with mental-health problems, grief, and a child they can no longer understand.

A pinnacle of gore and violence, the final scene leaves us watching between splayed fingers while the mother screams and burns alive. The movie ends with the firefighters extinguishing the fire but arriving too late to save the mother.

Meanwhile, Elias and Lukas walk across a cornfield to be reunited with their mother, unarmed and serene. She embraces the twins, and the three of them look at the camera with smiles on their faces.

Finally, this perfect family portrait dissolves into ashes. In Goodnight Mommy, the soundtrack is solely there to underline the crippling silence.

The soundtrack by Olga Neuwirth is like a whispered nightmare, with strange harmonies and distressing notes of glass harmonica and musical saw.

Where was the movie filmed? Goodnight Mommy was shot in a small village in the northern Austrian countryside close to the Czech border.

Here are three major themes explored throughout the film. In a movie where a house in the middle of nowhere plays such a pivotal role, we could have expected a dark, collapsing old manor with mold in the corner and moth-eaten curtains.

Instead, Goodnight Mommy takes place in an elegant, contemporary house, with immaculate concrete walls and large windows. Part of the creepiness is due to the decoration, or rather the lack of it: bare white walls, minimalist furniture…but the blood-curdling feeling is mostly due to the mother, who insists on keeping the blinds lowered and does not tolerate a sound.

The twins are thus banned from playing inside and spend their time in the surrounding fields while their mother lurks in silence and semi-darkness.

The mother speaks very little, as if having a conversation with her offspring was too demanding.

All in all, the dialogue could almost fit on a postcard. Silence has always been a big component of horror movies. The obviously absent father is never mentioned: Is he dead?

Has he left? The death of Lukas is also never brought up, despite the fact the mother clearly sees her son struggling with the loss of his brother and talking about him as if he was still there.

The accident seems to be quite recent, and a logical choice would have been to find a good family therapist. Instead, she went and got herself a facial surgery, wrapping herself up in bandages and silence.

But beyond her terrifying appearance, what mostly creates mistrust with her kid is not her looks but her behavior.

Her erratic actions, mood swings, and sudden bursts of anger alienate her children and the viewer as well.

We convince ourselves, just like Lukas and Elias, that she is not their mom because she does not act like a mom.

Her identity is stripped away, first by that creepy post-surgical mask, then by her attitude. In horror-movie territory, mothers often play an ambiguous role.

They are generally the one to notice that something is amiss, while their young child is carelessly playing with an ancient demon and their husband finds a logical explanation to satanic scriptures appearing on the walls at 4 AM sharp every night.

But not every movie goes for that happy ending…. Giving a dark twist to that protective and nurturing mother figure is…well, terrifying on a whole new level — a deep-rooted fear that speaks to our inner child.

I don't even know where I could even begin that would be an adequate point to start off this review. One of the things that is most impressive about this film is the fact that a large part of the film, and its horror, was improvised.

Yet the film maintains a focus and narrative strength that makes it come across like it was as tightly-scripted as humanly possible, where every shot has a meaning, every line has a purpose and no motion is wasted.

Eventually a script was written, but, according to Susanne Wuest, the mother, the kids playing Elias and Lukas, also named that in real life, never read it.

It also appears as if they haven't seen the film, which might be for the best. Another thing I like about the movie is the fact that the movie keeps you guessing right up until the very end.

You are never quite sure where they are heading and that makes the film a little more harrowing to experience. Let's just say that this isn't as straightforward a film as it appears to be.

You could say that there is a twist, but, when you look at the film and you actually inspect the clues that were right there in the open, it makes perfect sense.

It all fits within the context of the story the film is telling. The fact of the matter is that the twist makes the film even more disturbing and dark than it already is leading up to it.

As far as psychological horror goes, this might be one of the best I've seen in a fairly long time. Particularly how there's even a certain innocence about what the twins are doing.

Even as they're doing fairly horrific things to their mother, they're doing so out of the fact that they want to know where their 'real' mother is as this woman, who looks just like their mother, is acting like anything but.

Perhaps even innocence is the wrong way to describe it, but it's the closest I can come to. I don't think it ever came into either Lukas' or Elias' mind that what they were doing was wrong.

The film is deliberately paced, so I believe that will bother some people who aren't as patient so as to give the film a real shot before dismissing it as being 'too boring'.

But, again, to me, even if the film was largely improvised, I think there's still a focus to it and I do think that everything the film shows you serves a purpose into how everything is going to wind up.

It's never a boring movie, it's just a little more deliberate and one that will require some patience. Ultimately, however, this ends up being a real disturbing look at the innocence of these twins and what it drives them to do.

The film is beautifully shot and the acting is really strong, all around, so there's also that. I can't really describe the third act in detail without really spoiling the movie, but let's just say that it goes to some really dark places.

Overall, this movie is pretty damn great, no doubt about it. It's definitely not gonna be everyone's cup of tea, but I thought it was a great, dark and disturbing look into the mind of these twins.

Gonna require some patience, but this one is gonna stick with you for a long time. Jesse O Super Reviewer. Dec 03, An extremely well made psychological horror with quality writing and many superb moments, especially in the bravura second half.

There is a narrative twist and I did figure it out but this in no way lessoned the impact indeed my predicted foreknowledge made for unbearably tense viewing.

Susanne Wuest is brilliant as the titular mommy, expertly playing with audience sympathies throughout. Daniel P Super Reviewer. Oct 08, In this genre, what often separates the wheat from the chaff is the visual lexicon, that is - the discernible style of the director which is then boldly captured by the cinematographer.

The dread is palpable. The fact that the ambiguous story is created without much clarification intensifies the air of disorientation.

Granted there are a lot of red herrings that purposefully mislead the viewer in ways that don't always play fair. I still have no idea what that pizza delivery was about.

But in a production such as this, the misdirection only heightens the unease. The script skillfully undermines the strength of the familial bonds we hold dear.

I won't soon forget the experience. I just have one nagging question: Why are the Red Cross volunteers in Austria so aggressive? Mark H Super Reviewer.

Aug 10, Dark, atmospheric, and relentlessly unnerving, Goodnight Mommy is a psychologically lucid exploration of mental stability, trust, and family.

Though never quite living up to its full potential as a horror film, Goodnight Mommy creates a highly unique and agitating ambiance with immense payoff in its final, climactic reveal.

Though it is the middle of summer, the mother orders the twins to keep the blinds closed during the day, imposes a strict rule of silence inside the house, and allows them to only play outdoors.

The mother also acts cruelly and lashes out at Elias physically when he is mischievous or disobedient. The boys comment that this is something their mother would never do.

The twins begin to suspect that beneath her bandages, their mother may not be the same person. These doubts are confirmed when they find an old picture that shows the mother with another unknown woman who is wearing identical clothes and shares similar physical traits.

With the suspicion that the woman residing in their house is an impostor, the twins escape from the house and go to a church in a nearby town, where they try to get help from the priest.
